Visiting Artist Residency at the MIX Center
An incubator for experimental immersive art
The ASU Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) Center's Visiting Artist Residency serves as an incubator for experimental immersive art. Selected artists and technologists working at intersections of new media, immersive XR, AI, interactive experience, games and performance spend up to six weeks at the MIX Center installing and presenting work. The residency culminates in a public exhibition of a major project the artist develops to kick off MIX Center’s fall semester.
This program offers a unique opportunity to present impactful experiential art to the public while engaging with MIX Center's XR and immersive design graduate students.
Program components
Dates
- Residency is August—early September 2025 for up to six weeks, including exhibition
Residency stipend and support
- $7,000 stipend to cover travel, lodging and production expenses
- Project guidance from MIX Center technical staff and faculty
Studio access and production resources
- Residency access to facilities, including onsite 3D fabrication lab, wood and metal shop, audio and visual production and prototyping studios
- Choice of primary installation venue:
- Enhanced Immersion Studio: Four-story, 3,200-square-foot immersive projection, 55-channel spatial audio array programming capability. See the EIS Tech Sheet for details and images.
- Lobby: Includes a 32-foot high-res video wall
Mentorship and community engagement
- Interface with MIX Center research labs (Resilient Visions Collaboratory, People & Robots Lab, MediatedX Lab, Endless Games and Learning Lab, and more)
- Host public workshops and artist talks for students, makers and regional partners
Digital credentials and exhibition
- Earn ASU-issued digital credentials for your residency and technical achievements
- Exhibit your installation early Fall 2025 semester
Application
Applications are now open for the Summer 2025 Visiting Artist Residency.
Candidates should be experienced artists, practitioners or small teams (not associated with ASU) with demonstrated experience presenting works for a public forum and who are looking to prototype novel expressions of immersive experience or performance formats. Applicants may specialize in immersive XR, AI, interactive installation, spatial audio and more.
The application requires:
- A portfolio: Up to 10 images or 3 minutes of video.
- Artist Statement: 300 words max—why you want to join the residency and how you plan to engage MIX Center resources and community.
- Project proposal/pitch deck: 500 words max—installation concept, desired venue, tools and methods. Learn more about the MIX facilities.
